Abstract

Cancer statistics, 2020: Brain and other nervous system cancer incidence and death rates Siegel RL, Miller KD, Jemal A. Cancer statistics, 2020. CA: A Cancer Journal for Clinicians. doi: 10.3322/caac.21590. Cancer incidence The American Cancer Society estimates that there will be 23,890 new cases of brain & other nervous system (ONS) cancers this year in the U.S. and 18,020 people will die from these types of cancer (Table 1). Leukemia is the most common childhood (birth to 19 years of age) cancer, accounting for 28% of cases, followed by brain & ONS cancers (26%), greater than one-quarter of which are benign/borderline malignant (Table 12).In adolescents, brain & ONS cancers are most common (21%), greater than one-half of which are benign/borderline malignant, followed closely by lymphoma (20%). (p. 18) Cancer deaths Death rates increased over the past decade for brain & ONS cancers (p. 13). Brain & ONS cancers are the first leading cause of cancer death among men aged younger than 40 years and women aged younger than 20 years. These cancers are the fourth leading cause of cancer death among women aged 20 to 39 years and the fifth leading cause of cancer death among men aged 40 to 59 years (Table 8). Main findings

The American Cancer Society estimated 23,890 new U.S. cases of brain & other nervous system cancers and 18,020 deaths in 2020. The abstract notes that death rates for brain & ONS cancers increased over the past decade and describes age/sex-specific rankings for cancer death burden.

Outcomes measured

  • Brain and other nervous system (ONS) cancer incidence (estimated new cases)
  • Brain and other nervous system (ONS) cancer mortality (estimated deaths)
  • Trends in death rates for brain & ONS cancers over the past decade
  • Cancer burden rankings by age/sex groups
