About RF Safe
RF Safe has been online since 1998. It curates the science on radio-frequency (RF) exposure, explains it in plain language, presses for accountable public-health policy and designs open-source tools that reduce exposure.1
Our mission
Warn families, especially pregnant women and children, about radio-frequency risks regulators were ignoring, and design practical tools that actually reduce exposure.1
Our approach
Honesty over hype. We show the studies and their critics, treat SAR as a useful comparison tool rather than a health score, and call out "anti-radiation" designs that break RF physics.2
Our vision
A "Light Age": radio only where mobility is essential, with most indoor data carried over light (Li-Fi) and wired Ethernet. This is our advocacy position, not a regulatory finding.3
Why RF Safe exists
In 1995 John R. Coates' firstborn daughter, Angel Leigh, died shortly after birth with a neural tube defect.1 In the years that followed he read studies on electromagnetic fields and embryonic development, including Farrell et al. (1997) on chicken embryos, and in 1998 he founded RF Safe so other families would have the information he wished he had.45
This is RF Safe's own organizational history. It is not a claim that RF caused any particular medical condition.6
Timeline
- 1995: Angel Leigh Coates dies shortly after birth with a neural tube defect.1
- 1998: John Coates founds RF Safe; the site has been online ever since.17
- Aug. 13, 2021: In Environmental Health Trust v. FCC, the D.C. Circuit finds the FCC's decision to keep its 1996-era limits "arbitrary and capricious" and remands it, a ruling RF Safe has cited in its advocacy ever since.8
- Dec. 18, 2025: RF Safe launches the Ethical Connectivity Pledge, asking celebrity-backed wireless plans to adopt child-first connectivity standards and invest in light-based networking.9
- Apr. 20, 2026: RF Safe publishes its proposed comments to the FCC on non-thermal EMF mechanisms and Public Law 90-602.10
- Sept. 17, 2026: HHS places its Request for Information on electromagnetic fields and wireless radiation on public inspection. RF Safe opens public forums that organize every comment by topic.11
- Oct. 6, 2026: RF Safe's forums show 1,703 original HHS comments and 590 FCC filings.12
- Nov. 2026: RF Safe's tools and research come together on rfsafe.app.
What we do
Curate the research
A searchable library of more than 6,400 EMF study records, with effect and evidence labels.
Make SAR understandable
SAR Compare, rankings, a child-size view and phone-vs-phone pages, all from FCC-reported values.
Open the public record
The HHS forum, FCC forum and HHS comment archive organize public comments by topic so anyone can read them.
Push for accountable policy
We ask officials about Section 704 of the 1996 Telecom Act and Public Law 90-602, which gives HHS a radiation-control mandate for electronic products.13
Publish open-source designs
Phone-case designs like TruthCase that put a shield between you and the phone, plus the public TruthScore red-flag checklist.2
Teach
Classes, interactive demonstrations and plain-language guides.
